Hilke's local and historical knowledge is vast.

Wow! Hilke was amazing! Our teenagers were dreading their third tour in 10 days. Hilke was able to adapt our tour to start in the neighborhood where they could see street art and then took us to see the sites that were interesting to them. She gave high level overviews but answered details when we asked. She has an incredible energy that got our kids interested. I wish we could bring her to every city! Kaninchen
Kleine Bewohner des Todesstreifens

Einst hoppelten sie in einer großen Horde auf der Straße herum. 120 waren es an der Zahl. Jetzt gibt es nur noch 50. Und die, die noch da sind, werden leicht übersehen, heben sie sich doch nicht sonderlich gut vom Straßenbelag ab. Schon gar nicht befinden sie sich an einem Ort, an dem man verweilt und Muße hat, sich genauer umzusehen. Wer hier entlanggeht, will irgendwo hin, nur die Straße entlangeilen oder sie an der Fußgängerampel queren. Und so führen die kleinen Kaninchen aus Messing ein weitgehend unbeachtetes Dasein. Stadtführerin Hilke Gerdes jedoch schenkt ihnen gern ein Lächeln, wenn sie hier vorbeigeht - auch, weil sie sich freut, dass sie die Tierchen entdeckt hat. „Mich faszinieren gerade die weniger auffälligen Dinge, die vielleicht unscheinbar erscheinen, aber beziehungsreich sind", erklärt sie. Als ihr die Kaninchen auffielen, hat sie sich gleich über den Hintergrund informiert - und herausgefunden, dass es sich um Überbleibsel eines 1999 durchgeführten Projekts der 1950 geborenen Künstlerin Karla Sachse handelt. „Wir stehen hier auf dem ehemaligen Todesstreifen, der entlang der Mauer verlief", sagt Hilke Gerdes. „Die Idee war, daran zu erinnern, dass in diesem Todesstreifen viele Kaninchen lebten." Denn für die Tiere, erzählt die Kunsthistorikerin, sei dieser für Menschen tödliche Bereich das reinste Paradies gewesen. „Es war grün, es gab viel Gras und auf die Kaninchen durfte nicht geschossen werden." Zumindest anfangs nicht. „Später wurden es zu viele, da hat man sie dann schon bekämpft."
Zum politischen Hintergrund: „Hier befand sich der Grenzübergang von Wedding nach Mitte", erläutert Hilke Gerdes. Der sei für die Einreise von West-Berlinern nach Ost-Berlin gedacht gewesen. „Viele hatten ja drüben Verwandtschaft, die sie besuchen wollten. Um einreisen zu dürfen, brauchte man allerdings einen Passierschein." Jedoch, schränkt die Historikerin ein, habe es diese Möglichkeit erstmals an Weihnachten und Silvester 1963 gegeben. In einer Bekanntmachung hieß es: „Bürger von Berlin (West), die Passierscheine für den 31. 12. 1963 und den 1. 1. 1964 besitzen, haben die Möglichkeit, erst im Verlaufe des 1. 1. 1964 wieder auszureisen. Die Wiederausreise muß am 1. 1. 1964 bis spätestens 24.00 Uhr erfolgen."
Zahlreiche Menschen haben diese Möglichkeit genutzt: Mehr als 700.000 West-Berliner besuchten zwischen 19. Dezember 1963 und dem 5. Januar 1964 ihre Verwandten in Ost-Berlin. „Ab 1964 gab es dann für Rentner, die in der DDR lebten, die Möglichkeit, Verwandte im Westen zu besuchen", erzählt die Historikerin. Bis 1966 konnten drei weitere Abkommen geschlossen werden, nämlich im September 1964, im November 1965 und im März 1966. Genehmigungen für Übernachtungen wurden jedoch nicht erteilt. In allen Abkommen, auch im ersten von 1963/64 waren mit Ausnahme von Silvester nur Tagesaufenthalte gestattet.

Zurück zu den Kaninchen: Es gibt Anwohner, die sich für den Erhalt stark machen. Einer von ihnen ist Axel Schnittcher. Er lebt seit Februar 2007 in der Chausseestraße, bezeichnet sich selbst als „Hüter der Kaninchen" und sagt: „Kunst im öffentlichen Stadtraum hat es gegenüber der in den Museen schwer, da sie ständig von Zerstörung bedroht ist, insbesondere dann, wenn sie so unauffällig daherkommt wie das Kaninchenfeld. Wenn sich niemand darum kümmert, geht die Kunst mit Sicherheit verloren." Axel Schnittcher will sich dafür einsetzten, dass die restlichen 50 Kaninchen noch viele Jahre über den Berliner Straßenbelag hoppeln. Und dass sie sich vielleicht sogar irgendwann wieder vermehren: „Möglich, dass noch einige Kaninchen unter dem Asphalt schlummern", sagt Hilke Gerdes. Die Tierchen würden sich bestimmt freuen, wenn wieder der eine oder andere Sonnenstrahl auf sie fiele. Und Hilke Gerdes und Axel Schnittcher auch.

So geht's zu den Kaninchen:
Die Kaninchen hoppeln an der Ecke Liesenstraße/Chausseestraße über die Straße. Da sie teilweise eine ähnliche Farbe haben wie der Straßenbelag, muss man genau hinsehen, um sie zu entdecken.
